photographs were taken to document interviews conducted between the photographer and her subjects -- disabled persons and
their caregivers -- and were reproduced in Gans' book To live with grace and dignity. Other photographs depict persons and
activities associated with the World Institute on Disability in Berkeley, including the organization's co-founder Ed Roberts.

Lydia Gans was born in Germany in 1931. Her family immigrated to New York in 1938. Lydia moved to Berkeley, California after
graduating from high school. She was a professor of mathematics at Cal Poly Pomona from 1963 to 1988. After relocating to
Berkeley in 1988, she began to study photojournalism. She also worked with Ed Roberts at the World Institute on Disability.
Throughout her adult life Gans has been an activist for various causes: e.g. the Civil Rights Movement, the women's movement,
disability rights, and disaster relief. Her photographs have appeared in two of her books -- To Live With Grace and Dignity;
Brothers, Sisters and Disabilities -- and in many Bay Area-based periodicals and web sites pertaining to progressive politics
and social issues.
